This last track was included to give you some ideas on how to construct a solo.

I start this piece lightly, using mallets on the cymbals and creating crescendo rolls. Cupping the hands above the bell, after building up the tones in the cymbal can give a tremolo effect, as done at marker 0:15 with my Istanbul 20" Turk ride. I then switch to sticks on the cymbals and build, by adding tom hits and eventually stating the time by doing some rudimental 16th note drumming at marker 2:17. I also added the bass drum where the hand accents are, and completed the idea by adding some toms. Notice that I kept the accents consistent between the left and right limbs. If the right hand plays an accent, then the right foot plays one. If the left hand plays an accent, then the left foot does as well.

If you are soloing in the rock style, double bass is a great addition for ideas. Using a call-and-response form, as I did at marker 6:00, is pretty effective.

To start building your soloing arsenal, I would suggest that you get a recorder, go into your basement, and just play anything and everything that comes to your mind and record these ideas. Then play them back and pick out the ones that you like. You can either re-record them onto another tape or disc, or transcribe them for inclusion in your solo library. Arrange your transcriptions by genre for easy reference. You could also take your list with you to gigs and try to incorporate your transcription ideas into that evenings solos.
